West Java Singaparna People’s Resistance Against Japan

The struggle of the Singaparna people of West Java against the Japanese in the colonial era was definitely the most difficult time for the Indonesian nation, although the struggle never stopped. This struggle is certainly one of the biggest battles in Indonesia to make efforts to beat back the invaders.

In the colonial period, of course, there were various things done by the invaders that made the Indonesian people miserable and tormented. Therefore, various efforts were made to be able to buy welfare as well as community independence, especially in the West Java area. This is certainly also done with the support of various parties in it.

There was an important figure who later appeared in the event of the resistance of the people of Singaparna West Java against the Japanese . With his leadership, more and more people joined forces to spend and quell various bad attitudes from the invaders, in this case it was Japan at that time.

Rejection of the Movement That Sparked the Battle

When Japan began to control the territory of Indonesia was not only entrenched its power, but various cultures were brought to influence the people. You must have heard or read about it too. One culture that also seeks to be instilled from Japan is to pay homage to its flag.

Not only that, Japan is also trying to force the Indonesian people to sing their national anthem. Including the honor of facing the sun in honor of the Emperor of Japan or referred to as seikerei. Basically in the religion believed by the Japanese people, bowing to the sun is a form of respect for the sun god.

This was opposed and rejected by the Indonesian people and became one of the causes of the resistance of the People of Singaparna West Java against japan at that time. Of course, the existence of this seikerei is also opposed by many scholars who exist because it is also similar to the prayer movement. So that it further aggravated the hot atmosphere at that time and caused greater problems between Japan and Indonesia.

There have been many great clerical figures who oppose this movement and appeal to his troops to fight the opposing army. Of course, this is done to defend independence and does not want to do what is the religious belief of the Japanese people. But because it is so emphasized, the occupying army  will consider anyone who does not want to do so is a dissident and deserves to be punished.

Singaparna People’s Resistance to Japanese Policy

One of the clerics who at that time rejected the seikerei movement was KH Zainal Mustafa. He and all his students of Sukamanah pesantren clearly refused to do so and sparked the resistance of the people of Singaparna West Java against japan. Including also saying that for Muslims doing seikerei it is a shirked act and should be avoided.

Of course KH Zainal Mustafa did not remain silent to see the Japanese torture anyone who rejected the movement. He began to devise strategies to increase strength so that he could carry out a good rebellion against the Japanese forces. Troops from the students in the pesantren were deployed to be able to fight the enemy.

At first before the resistance between  the people of Singaparna West Java and the Japanese, the invaders sent his people to have talks with KH Zainal Mustafa so that he could understand. But it turned out that in the end the Japanese envoy was actually killed and made the invaders angry so decided to use a harder way.

Until finally the resistance of the people of Singaparna West Java against japan is no longer inevitable. Although indeed the number of troops is definitely lost so much that the opposing army can master the resistance. There were so many troops from pesantren who were detained by the Japanese and sentenced to death for being dissidents and not obeying his orders.

Singaparna People Who Are Anti Colonial Policies

The people in singaparna area itself are actually people who tend to be religious. So that various colonial policies are indeed very anti especially with various atrocities that have been committed. This is very inconsistent with the religious understanding embraced by most Singaparna people, namely Islam.

One of the disparagings of the resistance of the People of Singaparna west Java against the Japanese is because of the large number of people who died due to forced labor in that era. Likewise with all Japanese behavior seems inhumane. They have the heart to do everything they can to punish anyone who does not want to obey what has been ordered and is considered a rebel.

Moreover, more and more policies are given by the Japanese side and there is no reason to reject them. The policy is considered contrary to the teachings of religion and its coercive nature. So that this makes the people live miserable and do not have the freedom to do according to their religious teachings.

The resistance of the people of Singaparna West Java against the Japanese took place in Sukamanah Village for approximately one hour. The troops led by KH Zainal Mustafa carried swords and pointed bamboo as his weapons. There is a combination in addition to the students there are also teams from the ministry, Garut, and Tasikmalaya. They all banded together to fight against the arbitrary japanese colonization even though they eventually had to lose.

Getting to know KH Zainal Mustafa

KH Zainal Mustafa or who in his childhood was known as Umri or Hudaemi was actually an ordinary person. He studied at Pesantren Gunung Pari and changed places a lot as a wandering student. This is done to gain the knowledge of religion more deeply from various kinds of teachers and scholars of course.

After studying in several pesantren in West Java and because of his intelligence, umri was appointed as an assistant from Kyai Muttaqien. Umri has noble aspirations to be able to establish and manage his own pesantren. Until finally the dream was realized in the baguer village area, Singaparna. Of course this is the story before the resistance of the people of Singaparna West Java against Japan.

Umri later changed his name to KH Zainal Mustafa after performing hajj in 1937. He requires learning Arabic as the main thing to learn in order to more easily understand the religious sciences. But in his pesantren it was also taught material about The history of Indonesia and the defense of the homeland.

The existence of this material made KH Zainal Mustafa supervised by intelligence from the Dutch colonists. Even then he was imprisoned in the Netherlands. Of course this happened because of his criticism of the colonial policies that were considered contrary to religious teachings and inhumane at the time.

He continues to do everything he can to defend his religion and people. Against every policy from the invaders to the Japanese came to Indonesia. His love for the homeland is unquestionable. There have been many of his services as a national hero carried out and had a great impact on the struggle of the Indonesian people.

The struggle of the people of Singaparna must indeed end in defeat. But in other areas there is also a lot of resistance to complete the policies of the invaders that are not right for the welfare of the people. Starting from the resistance of the people of Singaparna West Java against Japan the struggle of the Indonesian people is indeed so extraordinary to defend its independence.
